Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany is home to VfB Stuttgart of the German Bundesliga.
The stadium currently seats a little over 54,900 after one of the stadium sections was demolished during the Summer 2009. This demolition was completed as the stadium was converted to a football-only arena. Construction on the modified stadium was completed in December 2011. Although the stadium can seat 60,000 for Bundesliga matches with terraces, UEFA regulations prevent terrace seating during international football matches.
The Mercedes-Benz Arena features a unique and easily recognizable roof construction. Made of precision-tailored membranes of PVC-coated polyester, the roof tissue is durable enough to withstand 1,000kg of weight per square decimeter. It is suspended from an aesthetic steel frame that runs around the entire stadium weighing approximately 2,700 metric tons. The steel cables connecting the roof to the frame alone weigh about 420 tons.
